Earcandling
is a holistic technique used to remove wax from the ear. The procedure
consists of taking a hollow candle and placing the unlit end into
the ear canal just far enough to establish a seal. The outer end
is lit, consuming all air from the auditory canal, thus creating
a vacuum seal which forces the impacted wax and any other debris
to soften and move to the bottom of the candle. This is all done
while the patient is lying on his/her side.
Said
to be an ancient practice originating in Egypt, this method of
cleaning the ears was used for both spiritual cleansing as well
as physical cleansing. There are mixed reactions from healthcare
professionals regarding this practice. Most doctors seem to agree
that this treatment is not a suitable method for cleansing the
ears. Permanent damage can be done to the inner ear should the
wax drip.
If
you are considering having this technique performed on your ears,
be sure to check with your doctor first. The type of wax used,
as well as other materials and the professionalism of the person
performing the act must all be taken into serious consideration.
