Cochlear implants may help some children with profound or total hearing loss who do not benefit from conventional hearing aids or FM systems. A wire containing electrodes is surgically placed into the cochlea and a magnetic receiver is implanted in the mastoid bone just behind the ear. The receiver connects to an externally worn stimulator that sends signals to the electrodes in the cochlea, creating the sensation of hearing.
